RTG MultiSenses - MultiScales

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group “MultiSenses – MultiScales: Novel approaches to decipher neural processing in multisensory integration” is funded by the DFG and provides an exciting research and training environment for a cohort of motivated PhD/doctoral candidates.

Multisensory processes are fundamental in scaffolding perception, cognition, learning, and behavior. However, the structural and functional architecture that underlies the brain’s ability to seamlessly integrate simultaneous multisensory inputs is poorly understood. Therefore, the goal of the RTG MultiSenses – MultiScales is to gain a conceptual understanding of the mechanisms that govern crossmodal integration of sensory information at multiple scales. The RTG will provide in-depth expertise in sensory neurobiology, foster the spirit of transdisciplinary collaboration, and offer hands-on training in a variety of cutting-edge techniques.

Aim of the RTG is to train expert individuals that make the transition from cells to systems and behavior. A coherent, though flexible curriculum will build a solid foundation in the core concepts of neuroscience. Combined with innovative qualification elements, professional skill development and – most importantly – the opportunity to conduct independent research in a nurturing environment, the aim is to train neuroscientists that can compete at the highest international level.

In this context, the activity of one of the available PhD positions will be integrated into a collaborative research group involving RWTH Aachen University and the INM-9/IAS-5 Computational Biomedicine institute in Forschungszentrum Jülich, providing the possibility to work in an excellent environment within the infrastructures of the Research Centre in Jülich, including the European most powerful supercomputing center.

The position is available, starting from October 1, 2018. The position is funded for a period of three years. Given the interdisciplinary character of the RTG, candidates from diverse background (including, but not limited to, life sciences, physics, computer sciences, engineering) should apply. Successful applicants should have an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in any of the relevant fields (e.g., biology, physics, chemistry, medicine, computer science, bioinformatics, modeling, image analysis, etc.). Fluency in English and a basic understanding / interest in quantitative methods and programming are expected.

Application must be submitted electronically as a single .pdf file to m.spehr@sensorik.rwth-aachen.de. The document must comprise a CV, a detailed statement of the candidate’s motivation to join the RTG, transcripts of records summarizing prior academic performance, and names / contact information of two references.
