Mechanism of action of a potential antibiotic against tuberculosis clarified

Tuberculosis is one of the world's most common infectious diseases with over two million peoples dying each year. In close collaboration with scientists of the University of Birmingham, Lothar Eggeling and his group succeeded to decipher the structure of the protein DprE1 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis is the causative pathogen of tuberculosis, and DprE1 essential for the survival of this bacterium.

Published in the prestigious journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), the corresponding manuscript (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1205735109) sheds light on the mechanism of action of new antibiotics and might represent a good starting point for the rational design of new drugs.
