Dr. Jan Marienhagen receives „Starting grant“ from the European Research Council (ERC)

Dr. Jan Marienhagen receives 1.5 million Euro from the European Research Council (ERC) in Strasbourg to support his research activities. With this “Starting grant” Dr. Marienhagen wants to establish a platform to engineer transcriptional biosensors for the intracellular detection of heterologous compounds in single cells. The application of these sensors in combination with flow cytometry and next-generation sequencing will enable high-throughput engineering of microorganisms at the single-cell level with unprecedented speed and simplicity. Furthermore, these biosensors will also prove to be a valuable tool to answer questions in basic science because they will help to elucidate the function of unknown genes and aid the discovery of novel and unexpected functional links in cellular metabolism.

ERC Starting Grants aim to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe. The scheme targets promising researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. It will support the creation of excellent new research teams.
