Research cooperation between IBG-1 and BIOTEC (Thailand)

Per year, Thailand produces more than 50 million tons of agricultural biomass including rice straw and husk, sugarcane leaves and bagasse, palm trunk and leaves, corn stover, corn cob and cassava roots. To realize a biobased economy, these abundant and underutilized lignocellulosic feedstocks need to be converted to biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials.

A research collaboration combining strength from IBG-1 and the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Thailand has been initiated with a focal point on integrative biorefineries. IBG-1 performs state of the art research in the field of industrial bioprocess development and quantitative bioanalytics. BIOTEC is an active research institute in the area of bioresources and biomass process technology ranging from thermal and catalytic pretreatment and fractionation over processing biomass up to fuels and chemicals.

The research collaboration is supported by the Alexander von Humbold Foundation. Dr. Unrean Pornkamol from BIOTEC institute has obtained a Georg Forster Research Fellowship and will stay for 18 months in the team of Dr. Stephan Noack. Both partners share complementary interest in engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Corynebacterium glutamicum towards robust cell factories for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to value-added products, and on the translation of these platform technologies to industrial application. In particular, they aim for high-solid operations with hydrolysates from bagasse to increase product yield and titer of bulk products such as ethanol and different organic acids.
