Front Cover of Adv. Func. Mater. – Semiconductors for Water Photoelectrolysis

A new publication by Dina Fattakhova-Rohlfing (IEK-1) and colleagues from Universität Duisburg-Essen (R. Pentcheva et al.), MPI für Eisenforschung (C. Scheu et al.) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (T. Bein et al.) has appeared in Advanced Functional Materials.

The paper deals with the mechanism of photoelectrochemical water oxidation on α-Fe2O3 hematite photoanodes with different designed tin-dopant distributions. Using the combination of defined model systems, atomically resolved structure investigation, theoretical calculations and electrochemical characterization, the study allows to understand the factors governing the processes of water photoelectrolysis on doped metal oxide semiconductors and provides the ways to maximize the photoconversion efficiency.
