1st Joint Workshop of RIKEN RAP and JCNS

11 July 2017

The Japanese RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics (RAP) and the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) held a joint workshop on compact accelerator-driven neutron sources (CANS) for the first time on 4-5 July, 2017 at the RIKEN campus in Wako near Tokyo, Japan. The workshop tackled common research topics regarding the development of target and moderator systems for CANS at both institutes.

Dr. Yoshie Otake, head of the Neutron Beam Technology Team at RIKEN RAP welcomed the guests from Jülich and highlighted the importance of the collaboration between the two institutes in this field. Over the last two years, RIKEN has operated the accelerator-driven neutron source RANS to develop applications in material sciences using neutrons. A key focus here is the development of portable systems for use in civil engineering projects involving roads, bridges, and public buildings.

With their expertise in the field, RIKEN will help JCNS to further develop their concept of the high brilliance neutron source (HBS) in Jülich and establish common projects on target, moderator and instrument development.

Dr. Thomas Gutberlet, Scientist and Coordinator at the JCNS, emphasized the long-standing experience and prolific cutting-edge research RIKEN can share with JCNS and the importance of working together to exchange ideas and knowledge in this area. RIKEN will benefit from the expertise of JCNS in developing targeted instrumentation and in operating neutron instruments worldwide.

Prof. Dr. Satoshi Wada, head of the Advanced Photonics Technology Development Group of RIKEN RAP, expressed a strong interest in taking advantage of common ground and in both institutes joining forces. A Memorandum of Understanding has been prepared to structure the collaboration and will be signed by both partners. After the success of the two-day workshop, the next one is planned to be held in Jülich in 2018.
