Advanced Simulation and Open-Source Software Attracted Scientists to JCNS Workshop 2018

16 November 2018

by Thomas Gutberlet, JCNS

The annual JCNS Workshop – Trends and Perspectives in Neutron Instrumentation was devoted this year to the topic of “Advanced simulation and open-source software in neutron scattering”. The workshop was held at the beautiful Evangelische Akademie Tutzing at Lake Starnberg, south of Munich, from 29 October to 1 November, and attracted an international group of more than 50 scientists and programmers from various areas and scientific backgrounds.

The presentations by scientists focused on a wide range of topics, from theoretical work, molecular dynamics simulations, and scientific software to instrument simulation software, machine learning, and sophisticated data analysis routines. The workshop brought together a number of experts from areas as diverse as magnetism, soft matter, biology, structure analysis, computer science, and neutron instrumentation for an open exchange of ideas, problems, and possible solutions.

Inspired by the intense discussions, many participants expressed the wish for a regular workshop of this kind. JCNS will take this suggestion into account in future meetings.
