Consolidator Grant: Interview with Samir Lounis on his DYNASORE project

Jun. Prof. Samir Lounis (Peter Grünberg Institute – Quantum Theory of Materials (PGI-1/IAS-1) and RWTH Aachen) investigates the suitability of complex magnetic nanostructures for use in information technology. His research project “Dynamical magnetic excitations with spin-orbit interaction in realistic nanostructures" (DYNASORE) is funded from the European Research Council, ERC) with a “Consolidator Grant”.

The focus of the project is on magnetic structures such as vortex-shaped skyrmions, first discovered a few years ago. These structures could one day be used to process and store digital data with very little energy expenditure in the tiniest of spaces. In an interview to mark the ERC’s ten-year anniversary, Lounis explains more about his research project and the significance of the Consolidator Grant for his work.
