Atmospheric Pollutants: Ethane Emissions on the Rise Again Since 2010

Jülich, 24 May 2017 – A bulletin published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in May reported a sharp rise in ethane emissions in the atmosphere of the Earth’s northern hemisphere. Ethane is a component of natural gas alongside the strong greenhouse gas methane. The bulletin cites the increased level of oil and gas production in North America as one of the reasons for the rise. As a partner of WMO, scientists at Jülich’s Institute for Tropospheric Research were involved in the measurements and the bulletin.
