Prof. Dr. Christian Wandrey

Former Head of Institute of Biotechnology 2

Christian Wandrey was Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Bonn and head of the Institute of Biotechnology 2 at Forschungszentrum Jülich from 1979 to 2008. Born in Plauen, Germany, in 1943, he completed his studies in chemical engineering and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Hannover in 1973. In 1977 he received his Venia legendi for Biochemical Reaction Engineering (University of Hannover). From 1977 to 1979 Dr. Wandrey worked as Associated Professor at the University of Clausthal.

In 1983 Professor Wandrey was awarded the Technology-Transfer Prize of the Minister for Research and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1987 the Philip Morris Award for the development of a biogas high performance process, and in 1995 the Enzyme Engineering Award of the Engineering Foundation, New York, USA. He received the Carl Friedrich Gauss Medal of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (Brunswick Scientific Society) in 1999, and the Friedrich Wöhler Award of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society) in 2002. He is full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering and corresponding member of the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Saxon Academy of Science), of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaften (Brunswick Scientific Societies) and of the Schweizerische Akademie der Technischen Wissenschaften (Swiss Academy of Technological Science).

Professor Wandrey's special research interest was bioprocess development with main focuses in enzyme technology and fermentation technology. More than 330 scientific publications, about 100 patents and patent applications, and over 400 seminars present his scientific work. He is co-initiator of 4 start-up companies, co-editor of 2 books, and member of the editorial boards of various scientific journals.
