Prof. Dr. Michael Bott

Head of Systemic Microbiology (IBG-1)

Michael Bott, born 1959 in Tann-Lahrbach (Rhön), studied biology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and received his doctorate in 1987. From 1989-1998 he was member of the Institute of Microbiology at the ETH Zürich in Switzerland, first as postdoc with a DFG grant, later as research associate and finally as group leader. In 1998 he completed his habilitation and received the Venia legendi in Microbiology from the ETH Zürich. In the same year he accepted a professorship for biochemistry at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf associated with the function as head of the biochemistry group at the Institute of Biotechnology 1 of the Forschungszentrum Jülich. Since 2007 Michael Bott is director of the Institute of Biotechnology 1 (renamed in 2011 to Institute of Bio- and Geosciences 1: Biotechnology) and Professor of Biotechnology at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

Within IBG-1: Biotechnology, Michael Bott heads the department “Systemic Microbiology”, which is active in the fields of molecular and applied microbiology. His fundamental research aims at the elucidation of metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction networks in selected biotechnologically relevant bacteria. Major topics are the functional analysis of the respiratory chain, transcriptional regulators, two-component signal transduction systems, and covalent protein modification by serine/threonine phosphorylation and pupylation. Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are important tools in these studies. The applied research aims at the development of microbial cell factories for conversion of renewable carbon sources to value-added chemicals and pharmaceuticals, such as amino acids or organic acids. Besides metabolic engineering, novel high-throughput technologies based on genetically encoded biosensors are employed for strain and enzyme development.

Michael Bott is member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Bioeconomy Science Center (BioSC), the Cluster Industrielle Biotechnologie CLIB2021, DECHEMA, and the Vereinigung für Allgemeine und Angewandte Mikrobiologie (VAAM).
