In order to investigate realistic acoustic scenes in functional imaging and appropriate reproduction and simulation systems for the acoustic stimuli are needed. Basics for the binaural representation of the acoustic environment is on the one hand the individual measurement of the so-called Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF), and on the other hand a systematic equalization of the headphone systems used in functional imaging systems.
Little knowledge exists concerning the functional architecture of the auditory cortex with regard to more demanding tasks such as speech perception, or listening in rooms. A significantly enhanced stimulation promises significant advances in functional brain mapping.
