The Nobel Prize in Chemistry Also Goes to a German Scientist

[10. Oktober 2007]

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ertl from the Department of Chemical Physics at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry. He is the second German scientist to receive a Nobel Prize in 2007.

The Board of Directors of Research Centre Jülich congratulated the scientist by fax and also sent congratulations to Prof. Albert Fert, who won the Nobel Prize in physics together with Prof. Grünberg. Here is an excerpt from the letter to Prof. Ertl:

"On behalf of Research Centre Jülich, we would like to express our warmest congratulations on your winning the Nobel Prize in chemistry. We are extremely pleased that you received the highest scientific honour today on your 71st birthday. One can hardly imagine a better birthday present than this!

The Nobel Prize in chemistry represents the well-deserved credit for your work and is, together with the Nobel Prize in physics for Professor Grünberg, a significant sign for the importance of Germany as a science nation.

Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem
Dr. Ulrich Krafft"
