Leaving the Ivory Tower
Largest German survey on scientists' media contact
Jülich, 1 August 2011. Many scientists are eager to reach the general public via the media and to make their specialist knowledge available to policymakers.
This is suggested by initial results of the largest German survey so far on scientists' media contact, which ended on 31 July.
The image of research in the ivory tower, behind closed doors, is therefore simply not true. Jülich communications scientist Hans Peter Peters is expecting the first final results from 1 August 2011. His working group interviewed 1,600 scientists on the frequency and nature of their contact with the media and with journalists, and on their impressions of such contact.
