Contract Signed for Cooperation with FAIR

Jülich scientists to build new accelerator for antiprotons

Jülich, 17 October 2011 – Jülich scientists will construct the high-energy storage ring (HESR) for the international accelerator centre FAIR in Darmstadt. The cooperation agreement was signed today at Forschungszentrum Jülich by the administrative director Dr. Simone Richter and the chairman and scientific director Prof. Dr. Boris Sharkov from FAIR GmbH and by Karsten Beneke, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, member of the Board of Directors, from Jülich. FAIR stands for "Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research". The billion-euro project is one of the largest research endeavours in Europe and indeed worldwide. Research operation is scheduled to begin in 2018 enabling new types of experiments to be implemented on the structure of matter and development of the universe.
