Flight into Icy Clouds
Jülich, 24 April 2012 - Mixed-phase clouds made up of ice crystals and droplets of water are important for climate models. The VERDI campaign (Vertical Distribution of Ice in Arctic Clouds) aims to characterize their properties. As part of the campaign, coordinated by the University of Leipzig, the research aircraft Polar 5 set off for the Arctic on Sunday, 22 April, from the Canadian city of Inuvik. On board is the NIXE-CAPS spectrometer, which Jülich atmospheric researchers use to study cloud particles.
