BMBF Launches DBS SMART Research Project

Development of an intelligent deep brain pacemaker for Parkinson's disease

Cologne, Jülich, 7 May 2012 –Treatment with brain pacemakers is a great help for many Parkinson's patients. However, this treatment often has side effects. A project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) referred to as DBS SMART is developing a novel pacemaker for clinical research that can be implanted and that is intended to suppress the symptoms less aggressively and for a longer time by applying modern mathematical methods. At the official project launch on Friday, 4 May 2012, Thomas Rachel, Member of the German Bundestag and State Secretary in BMBF, presented notification of grants totalling € 1.32 million to ANM Adaptive Neuromodulation GmbH, Forschungszentrum Jülich and Cologne University Hospital.
