Mechanism of Action of New Antibiotics for Tuberculosis Deciphered

Jülich, 26 June 2012 – Tuberculosis is one of the most frequently occurring infectious diseases worldwide. Increasingly resistant bacteria are making it more difficult to treat and contain the disease. In the renowned journal PNAS, biotechnologists from the University of Birmingham (UK) and Forschungszentrum Jülich describe for the first time the structure of the protein DprE1, which is essential for the survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the most frequent pathogen.
