Optimized Bacteria Reduce Cost of Feed

Biotechnologists improve lysine production for animal feed

Jülich, 4 July 2012 – Every year, 1.5 million tonnes of the essential amino acid lysine are produced. A large proportion goes to the feed industry, but lysine is also required for other purposes, such as drip solutions. Together with Evonik Industries and academic partners, scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich have now discovered how to produce up to a third more lysine than other standard biotechnological methods. The results will be published in the August issue of the journal Biotechnology & Bioengineering. (DOI: 10.1002/bit.24486)
