Neurons Show Executives to be True Pragmatists

Jülich, 4 September 2012 – Whether they're buying shares, negotiating purchases or working on storage logistics, executives take decisions all day long. In doing so their brains make use of different neural networks than non-executives. This has been demonstrated by Dr. Svenja Caspers and her team from Forschungszentrum Jülich together with business psychologists and sociologists from the University of Cologne. Executives primarily activate a region of the brain that supports a time- and purpose-optimized solution on the basis of empirical values. In contrast, non-executives use other neural networks to solve the problem or tasks in a stepwise approach. The findings have been published in the journal PLoS ONE.
