More Efficient Power Supply for Trucks

New system employs high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Jülich, 19 February 2013 – Fuel cells are not only of interest for future hydrogen drives. They can also be used to supply vehicles with electric power in an environmentally friendly, efficient, and quiet manner – in particular during idling. For this purpose, Jülich scientists have developed a new system with high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (HT-PEFCs), which directly converted diesel and kerosene during test operation. The system is operated autonomously and provides an electric power of 5 kW as required by auxiliary power units in trucks.
