Observing the Unobservable

Jülich, 17 December 2013 – For decades, physicists and chemists have been searching for a way to measure the wave function of electrons in atoms, molecules, and solids. The electrons’ wave properties determine how all matter behaves, but until now these properties could only be measured in full theoretically. Scientists from Graz and Jülich have now succeeded for the first time in experimentally determining these properties, which are not directly accessible, in full for complex molecules.
