Successful conclusion of expedition to explore Arctic clouds
Jülich, 26 May 2014 – In northern Canada, atmospheric researchers have attempted to get to the bottom of Arctic amplification, the phenomenon of intensified climate change in the Arctic. The scientists, some of whom are from Jülich’s Institute of Energy and Climate Research, conducted measurements over the course of five weeks at a field station and with two research aircraft as part of the RACEPAC project (Radiation-Aerosol-Cloud Experiment in the Arctic Circle). The structure and the radiation properties of clouds were measured simultaneously by the aircraft. This strategy will enable the scientists to link the various parameters in such a way that their findings can be incorporated more easily into weather and climate models in future.
