Jülich, 7 November 2014 – An interdisciplinary team of students from RWTH Aachen University won one gold medal in the iGEM Competition in Boston (USA). It was the first time the team had entered the international synthetic biology competition. The fifteen biotechnologists, whose instructors came from RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich, won gold for the best development of an analytic method and also received special commendations for the best software and the best safety concept. The team, which was one of 245 in the competition, developed special "detective" bacteria and measuring instruments that are cheap to manufacture, which can be used to rapidly detect disease-related organisms, such as hospital pathogens, at a low cost.
