Science: Mystery of the Low-Platinum Nanocatalyst Solved

Jülich, 18 December 2014 – Novel nanoparticle catalysts could dramatically reduce the costs for fuel cells. A catalyst developed by researchers from Berlin and Jülich functions with one-tenth of the usual amount of platinum. Until now, it was unclear how the octahedron shape of the particles and the particular distribution of the elements arise. Using ultrahigh-resolution electron microscopy, the scientists have now shown for the first time that the crystalline growth takes place in different stages.
