Special New Steel for the Transformation of the Energy Sector

Jülich, 15 July 2015 – Conventional power plants, among others, are affected by the consequences of the transformation of the German energy sector: As soon as enough electricity is generated from renewable sources, they are required to shut down. Jülich materials scientists have developed a new type of steel which is capable of withstanding the frequent load changes in steam power plants. The material, called HiperFer (High-Performance Ferritic Steel), is more durable and less susceptible to corrosion than alloys currently in use.
