Atmospheric Gravity Waves Discovered in New Satellite Images

1 December 2015 – An international research team including scientists from Jülich have succeeded in making detailed observations of disturbances in the Earth's middle and upper atmosphere which can be caused by air flows. By means of infrared images recorded by two different NASA environmental satellites, they observed the propagation of these atmospheric gravity waves from the Earth's surface up to the mesosphere at an altitude of 90 km. The images represent an important building block towards improving future climate models. The scientists have now published their results in the American journal PNAS (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1508084112).
