Bacterial Gene Ensures Balance

Jülich, 17 May 2016 – Some bacterial strains contain a sort of "maker gene". It sets in motion a complex cell machinery that digests and recycles proteins. Jülich scientists have discovered that the marker gene also plays a major role in the iron balance and thus the growth of cells. These new findings could help to combat infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. The article, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, was selected as the Editor’s Choice by the journal Science Signaling.
