Unexpected Diversity of Shape of Red Blood Cells

Jülich, 11 November 2016 – One of the causes of circulatory problems can be a change in the viscosity of the blood. Investigations by German and French physicists now suggest a connection between the viscosity of the blood and the plastic deformability of red blood cells. The findings thus contradict the conventional physical theory that views red blood cells as a droplet in a liquid.
