Nitrogen Oxides: Novel Catalyst to Purify Exhaust Gases without Additives

Jülich researchers together with RWTH Aachen University and industrial partners are developing a new technology to efficiently reduce NOx emissions from diesel exhaust gases

Jülich, 23 October 2017 – The emissions of nitrogen oxides from diesel vehicles have been causing controversy for some time now. Even catalysts which reconvert these harmful pollutants into nitrogen using additives such as urea only work at exhaust gas temperatures above 150 °C. Such temperatures are often not achieved, particularly by commercial vehicles, under certain conditions such as urban traffic. In order to improve the situation, scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are working together with RWTH Aachen University and industry partners Ford, Deutz, Sasol, FEV, Umicore, and Clariant: within the scope of the DeNOx project, a novel type of catalyst will be developed which will almost completely remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from combustion-engine exhaust gases without the use of additives.
