Jülich, 15 January 2017 – Integrative research approaches promoting the transition towards a sustainable bioeconomy in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) – this is the objective of the two new "FocusLabs" which will be funded for three years from 2018 onwards. These FocusLabs are part of the Bioeconomy Science Center (BioSC), NRW’s scientific centre of excellence for sustainable bioeconomy. Scientists from all four partner institutions of BioSC are involved in the FocusLabs. The interdisciplinary research approaches range from innovative technology that is set to significantly reduce the global use of fungicides and herbicides to the development of novel value chain networks for the sustainable production of basic chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) is investing a total of € 4.2 million in the two new FocusLabs as part of the NRW strategy project BioSC.
