PhD Position: Neurotransmitter loading in synaptic vesicles

The laboratory of Christoph Fahlke in the Institute of Complex Systems – Cellular Biophysics is looking for a PhD student with a thesis project that aims at studying the mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter accumulation in synaptic vesicles. Available methods range from molecular biology, patch clamp electrophysiology, neuronal cell culture, protein biochemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy to Molecular Dynamics simulations. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with an interest and/or experience in biophysics and biochemistry.

We are an interdisciplinary group focusing on the molecular and cellular function of membrane transport proteins (PNAS (2006) 103: 11411-11416; J Biol Chem (2015) 290, 25851-25862, PNAS (2013) 110, 12486-12491, Cell (2015) 160, 542-553, Glia (2017) 65, 388-400, Nat Commun (2017) 8, 2279) and on their dysfunction in genetic and acquired human diseases (Am J Hum Genet (2009) 85, 273-280; Brain (2012) 135, 3416-3425, Nature Genet (2013) 45, 1050-1054). We use multiple approaches ranging from computational biology on individual proteins to the analysis of organ functions in animal models.

The position is available for three years. You will be employed at Forschungszentrum Jülich, but obtain your PhD degree at the Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf. Successful candidates can also apply for membership in the International Helmholtz Research School of Biophysics and Soft Matter ( that provides a complementary research training at the interfaces of biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as transferable skills courses.
