Area of research
Permanent EDMs of fundamental particle violate both time invariance and parity. Assuming the CPT theorem this implies CP-violation. The CP-violation of the Standard Model predicts non-vanishing EDMs; however, their magnitudes are expected to be unobservably small. Hence, discovery of a non-zero EDM would be a signal for physics beyond the Standard Model. The main aim of the project is to carry out the first direct measurement of the proton and deuteron EDM at the Cooler-Synchrotron COSY in Jülich. The second aim is to identify critical aspects of spin dynamics for future electric storage ring EDM experiments for proton, deuteron and 3He.

Possible theses topics are

  • Spin dynamics simulations in storage rings
  • Development of electro-magnetic deflectors
  • Design or construction of a polarimeter

Candidates should have interest in the field of particle, nuclear and/or accelerator physics.
