Master’s Thesis: Characterization of Time Resolution of Silicon Photomultipliers before and after Irradiation with Cold Neutrons

The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation (ZEA-2: Systems of Electronics) is a scientific and technical institute of the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, which performs research and development projects in cooperation with the institutes of the Forschungszentrum and external partners. The focus of the work is the development of electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor technology and detector technology, signal and data processing, measurement technology as well as imaging and processing.

The ZEA-2 institute is currently involved in the development of a neutron detector prototype based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). A special challenge for SiPMs in a harsh radiation environment poses the radiation damage of the latter caused by incident neutrons. Different parameter of a SiPM such as dark current, photodetection efficiency (PDE) and output signal jitter are affected by the damage. In order to study SiPM performance degradation, quantitative measurements are being performed with the aim to compare the parameters of SiPMs from various manufacturers before and after irradiation. Current activity is the measurement of a SiPM output signal jitter under exposure to cold neutrons.

Your Task:
The focus of the work will lie on the development of a special SiPM characterization facility, and on the measurement of the SiPM output signal jitter in the time domain, before and after irradiation. The characterization facility should be consisting of the following sub-systems: picosecond pulsed diode laser, time correlated single photon counting system, and LabView based data acquisition software

Your profile:

  • Basic knowledge in the area of measurement technology and signal processing
  • Basic knowledge of lasers and photonics
  • Programming skills in C and LabVIEW
  • Autonomous working ability
