Doctoral Studies: (Bio)catalysis in Flow Chemistry

The Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry (Prof. Dr. Pietruszka) is a joint venture of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH located on the research centre campus in Jülich. Our research is dedicated to selective syntheses of active agents, derivatives thereof and chiral building blocks. Therefore, we try to combine the advantages of preparative-organic chemistry and biocatalysis. Our co-workers try to harness the synergies of chemistry and biology for sustainable, synthetic purposes.

Your job:
The doctoral position (3 years) will deal in enabling catalysis in flow chemistry on lab scale. Especially the combination with biocatalytic methods and their evaluation in flow chemistry should be evaluated for the synthesis of challenging building blocks for active agents such as pharmaceuticals. The methods portfolio includes:

  • flow chemistry for continuous syntheses
  • optimisation of processes by means of design of experiment
  • handling of enzymes (heterologous production, immobilisation, assays)
  • chemical analyses (NMR, MS, HPLC, GC etc.)

Besides the scientific aspects of the project, you will be integrated in our teaching responsibilities for biochemists and chemists (BSc and MSc).

Your profile:

  • finished master studies in (bio)chemical engineering, process engineering or comparable (final mark good/2.0 or better)
  • basic knowledge in synthetic chemistry and biochemistry
  • knowledge of process optimisation
  • interest in designing and assembling flow chemistry equipment
  • languages: English (fluent), German (optional)
  • you must be curious, communicative, and reliable
  • interest in scientific publications
