Master thesis: Electronic structure of solids investigated with ARPES and spinARPES
The Peter Grünberg Institut 6 of Forschungszentrum Jülich is offering a Master position in the field of electronic structure of solids.
The spin electronic band structure of solids plays a fundamental role in understanding their magnetic and transport properties. Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) and its spin-polarized version (spinARPES) are the most powerful techniques to map electronic band dispersions of crystalline solids. The resulting spectra reflect symmetries of the underlying electron wave functions, and provide direct information on the electronic states of surface localized electrons. Information on electron Fermi velocities, electron-electron correlations, and interactions of electrons with the lattice, can also be extracted from APRES data.
The new member of our team will prepare ultrathin films of Fe on Au(001) and investigate them using ARPES and spinARPES. Experiments will be performed at PGI-6 using the laboratory-based high-resolution photoemission system, which allows energy resolution down to 6 meV in ARPES mode. The resulting spectra will reflect quantum well (QW) structures in Fe films, which will evolve with film thickness. Results will be evaluated on the base of ab-initio electronic structure calculations within the established collaborations with leading theoretical groups in Germany. Ultimately these results can be related to the changes in hysteresis curves from similar Fe films, which were reported in the literature.
