Master Thesis: Implementation of Processor Cores into Integrated Circuits for High-Performance Measurement Applications

The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-2: Electronic Systems) is a scientific and technical institute of the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in cooperation with the institutes of the Forschungszentrum and external partners. The focus of our work is the development of electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor technology and detector technology, signal and data processing as well as measurement techniques. Hereby the preferred approach are silicon-based System-on-Chip (SoC, highly integrated) solutions.

Field of activity:
Many large-scale experiments demand a high-performance readout solution with many readout channels. Integrated circuits offer the flexibility to tailor the circuitry to the requirements, allowing the optimization towards low noise, high bandwidths, and large linearitiy to name a few parameters. However, continuous data taking with high precision would require an unreasonably large data rate on the interfaces. Therefore, intelligent and flexible data reduction methods have to be applied which involve flexible as well as adaptive signal processing and interchannel correlation. For this purpose, a processor integration close to the digitizing channels enables new capabilities and opportunities for next generation readout solutions.

Possible tasks:
In this development process, several master theses are available with varying topics in the field of digital integrated circuit design. Among them are the implementation and verification process of a processor core in a contemporary 65 nm CMOS process technology, virtual prototyping of such implementations, and the programming of this core with a software framework. Regardless of the topic, you will become an integral part of the design team and take part in the group’s daily business.

Your profile:

  • Electrical engineering or physics background
  • Experience with hardware description languages (VHDL or Verilog)
  • Experience with high-level programming languages (C/C++)
  • Basic knowledge of the CMOS design flow
  • Spirit for team work in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams
  • Analytical skills
