PhD project: Simulation based support of bioreactor design across lab and industrial scales for cultivation of microorganisms under comparable conditions

At IBG-1: Biotechnology, bioreactors of various types and dimensions are operated to cultivate microorganisms and produce valuable substances. It is of particular interest how such reactors need to be designed and operated in order to ensure the transferability of results from lab reactors at liter scale to production reactors at industrial large scale.

The advertised PhD project targets to support the design of bioreactors across scales and the cultivation of microorganisms under comparable conditions with simulation models. This requires to couple a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulator with metabolic cell models. Turbulent flow in a stirred reactor is calculated, and concentration profiles of solved substrates and products are determined along the trajectories of selected representative organisms.

The project requires solid methods knowledge and practical application experience with CFD simulation, ideally using COMSOL. Fundamental knowledge of metabolic modeling are desirable but can be acquired on the job. Good command of the English language is mandatory.
