PhD Position: Fermentation at the picoliter scale - Bioprocess characterization from a single-cell perspective

We have a PhD position vacant at the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH – IBG-1: Biotechnology in Jülich. The Microscale Bioengineering group develops single-use microfluidic devices for microbial single-cell analysis in industrial biotechnology and fundamental microbiology research.

Within this PhD project, single-use microfluidic cultivation devices with new environmental sensor concepts (O2, pH, glucose, etc.) shall be developed to monitor (imaging) relevant cultivation parameter inside microscopic cultivation chambers. Single-cells, micro populations or microbial communities shall then be cultivated under dynamic but well controlled environmental conditions and imaged by (fluorescence) time-lapse microscopy.

We are looking for outstanding graduates (Bioengineering, Physics, Microsystems Engineering, Biotechnology) with a passion for highly interdisciplinary projects. Ideally the candidates should have knowledge and experience in microfluidics, sensors, fermentation, and fluorescence microscopy.
