Master thesis: Several projects on the ANKE magnetic spectrometer

The main facility at the Institut für Kernphysik of Forschungszentrum Jülich is the Cooler-Synchrotron COSY-Jülich, which is used by several international collaborations for medium energy particle physics experiments with polarized and unpolarized proton and deuteron beams. The ANKE magnetic spectrometer is situated at an internal target position of COSY. It is equipped with solid, unpolarized cluster, and polarized gas targets, and these allow one to perform experiments with many different combinations of beam and target. The deuteron is often used as an effective neutron target in experiments. For such measurements ANKE is equipped with up to four Silicon Tracking Telescopes (STTs) that can register the spectator protons that escape the deuterium target. Consequently, many different kinds of experiment in pp- and pn-induced interactions, including those with polarization degrees of freedom, can be undertaken at the ANKE spectrometer.

An important part of the experimental program at ANKE is the study of strangeness production. In March 2011, the first experimental data on Lambda hyperon production in proton-neutron collisions were collected at ANKE using two STTs. In October 2013, the first data on the double-polarized Lambda hyperon production will be collected. Within the analysis of these experimental datasets, following projects are available for a master thesis:

  1. Luminosity determination using the Schottky method and pd elastic scattering events detected in the STTs,
  2. ANKE range telescope efficiency determination,
  3. Implementation of the ANKE STT into the Geant4 simulation codes for ANKE
  4. Beam and target polarimetry for the double polarized experiment,
  5. The first analysis of data from the double polarized experiment.

The ANKE collaboration is developing and maintaining a C++ analysis code for processing the experimental data. Candidates should have an interest in the field of particle physics, be prepared to modify and write parts of the analysis codes necessary for the project, and participate in experiment beam times. The position could be further extended into a PhD project upon mutual agreement.
