Master/Bachelor thesis: Modeling and simulation of microfluidic single-cell cultivation

Project Description:
Researching bacteria and other microorganisms does not only help us understand our world, but it is also essential for design and optimization of a growing number of biotechnological processes. Microfluidics offers new opportunities to this end, since structured channels and chambers with volumes of a few picoliters can be used for catching and cultivating single bacteria. Those can then be investigated for growth, antibiotic resistance or productivity. The research group Microscale Bioengineering at the Forschungszentrum Jülich develops and uses new microfluidic structures for a variety of current topics. The transport processes, e.g. for heat transfer and solute diffusion, in these systems are not yet well characterized. Aim of this project is to create a model, which can simulate such transport processes and quantify their impact on the organisms. The study is carried out in cooperation with the Modeling and Simulation group and will presumably be implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics, a commercial CFD program. In the end the models should enable us to predict the performance of current and future microfluidic designs.
