Master thesis: Design and development of an application for the integration of methods and models of Energy Systems Analysis

Against the background of dwindling fossil energy sources, rising global demand for energy and the manifold consequences of climate change, turning the energy supply from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is an important social task. To develop solutions for energy supply that are economical, ecological, and ensure a high security of supply, novel energy systems and infrastructure concepts must be examined taking various techno-economic development possibilities into account

At IEK-3, energy strategies are developed by analyzing and assessing alternative supply infrastructure designs. For this purpose, simulation and optimization models are utilized, implemented on high-performance computer architectures and calculated in parallel. At the same time, data management concepts are developed which allow the storage of heterogeneous and extensive scenario data on databases and file servers and enable a flexible level of detail in the analyses.

Based on this, specially adapted software concepts are required to integrate these kinds of models, methods and data in an efficient and user-friendly manner and to ensure their usability, for e.g., future research projects with cooperation partners from Germany and abroad..

Your task
Within the scope of this thesis, a software application is to be designed and implemented, integrating various components of energy systems analyses and linking these with remote databases and computing capacities. In addition to collecting general requirements, data and program designs must be prepared, tested and documented. The aim of this thesis is to implement a software concept that combines these methods and models on the basis of common datasets. This work will facilitate the investigation of overarching research questions in cooperation projects while improving the transparency and reproducibility of scientific results. The following tasks are to be addressed within the course of this thesis:

  • Familiarization with existing methods and models from the field of energy systems analysis and performing requirement analyses
  • Engineering data models and database implementation
  • Designing a program workflow for the integration of software components
  • Definition of cross-component interfaces
  • Development of a Graphical User Interface based on a heterogeneous computer and server architecture in the format of local and web-based applications

Your profile

  • Very good academic records in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computational Engineering Science, Simulation Science or a comparable study program with a focus on Applied Computer Science
  • Good knowledge of Python, SQL, HTML and JavaScript
  • Initial experiences in dealing with data modeling and databases
  • Good command of the English language
  • Interest in current energy technologies and energy policy
  • Ability to work autonomously and analytically within a project team
