Master thesis: Qubit control electronics for quantum information processing

The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-2 – Electronic Systems) is a scientific technical institute of Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in cooperation with the institutes of the research center as well as external partners. The focus of our work is electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor and detector technology, signal and data processing as well as measurement techniques. Hereby the preferred approach are silicon-based System-on-Chip (SoC, highly integrated) solutions.

Field of activity:
In future quantum computers, millions of qubits need to be addressed and read out in parallel. This puts very stringent and demanding requirements on the control electronic of the qubits based on classical technologies. On top, solid state or superconducting qubits have to be operated at cryogenic temperatures well below 100 mK, putting a limit on the total power budget of cryogenic control electronics on the order of 1 mW. Within the program, we implement circuits in standard CMOS and investigate their behavior at temperatures around a few Kelvin.

Your task:
Depending on the actual progress of the project there will be different tasks in the field of analog and digital integrated circuit design e.g. the implementation of various circuit blocks. Please contact us and ask for details about what thesis topics we can offer at a given time. The circuit design is mainly done within the Cadence design framework. If needed, additional software suites are available. The design flow ranges from schematic design to layout implementation and verification in a contemporary 65 nm CMOS process technology. You will become an integral part of the design team and take part in the group’s daily business.

Your profile:

  • Electrical engineering (or physics) background
  • Experience in the development process of integrated circuits is beneficial
  • Hands-on attitude
