Master thesis project: 3D-sidewall MEAs for in vitro electrophysiology

At the Institute of Bioelectronics (ICS-8) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, physicists, chemists, biologists, and engineers perform joint research on the scientific principles of the functional link between biological components and electronic components. This collaboration has led to the development of platforms for microfluidics, micro- and nano-patterning, and electronic biosensors. These technologies are not only developed to understand biological processes, but also pave the way for their application in sensor technology and diagnostics. With the advertised position we are planning to strengthen our research efforts to understand the biophysics of neuronal information processing.

Job Description:
Multielectrode arrays (MEAs) are the classical devices that are used to measure extracellular neuronal activity. However, the devices are typically planar and therefore the recordings are two-dimensional. Obviously, in order to understand brain activity in a more comprehensive way, three-dimensional electrodes must be developed. In contrast to existing works, in the proposed project we intend to fabricate the 3D-sidewall electrodes. The student is expected to execute cleanroom work on device fabrication, as well as further device packaging and electrodeposition of sidewall electrodes. Full study of electrochemical performance of the electrodes is expected, as well as impedance spectroscopy of the electrodes is to be studied by the student. Further, the devices will be tested in a “normal”, planar cell culture and 3D cell culture, with use of hydrogels. The work will be carried out in a close cooperation with a large team of master and PhD students.
