Advertising institute: JSC - Jülich Supercomputing Centre
Reference number: D149/2017, Mathematics, scientific computing

The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful computer systems for scientific and technical applications in Europe and makes it available for research purposes to scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany, and throughout Europe. Important fields of the work of the “mathematics and education” department at JSC include mathematical modelling and the development and optimization of innovative numerical methods and algorithms on massively parallel supercomputers.

For early 2018, we are now looking to recruit a

PhD student in the field of mathematics and/or scientific computing

Your Job:

  • development and analysis of fault-tolerant iterative time-stepping methods to protect against node failure and bit flips on large-scale supercomputers
  • implementation of the algorithms within parallel-in-time libraries
  • supervision of students and trainees
  • mathematical support for users from computational science and engineering

Your Profile:

  • university degree in the field of mathematics or scientific computing
  • profound knowledge of iterative methods and numerical ODE solvers (e.g. Euler, Runge-Kutta etc.)
  • strong expertise in C++ programming, first experience with scientific software frameworks like e.g. DUNE is helpful but not mandatory
  • social competence and good communication skills for collaborative work in and with interdisciplinary teams
  • excellent command of written and spoken English, command of German is helpful but not mandatory

Our Offer:

  • PhD degree in 3 years: comprehensive supervision and a focussed work plan in cooperation with one of our partner universities
  • embedding of the topic into the interdisciplinary research setting of the Joint Laboratory for Extreme Scale Computing (JLESC).
  • potential to develop your personal strengths, e.g. by comprehensive training in the field of high-performance computing
  • options for flexible working hours, support with childcare, and solutions suited to your individual situation
