MSc studentship on the optical properties on implanted monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides

Peter Grünberg Institute 9 (PGI-9), Forschungszentrum Jülich has an open Master student position on the optical properties of implanted monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Job description

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with the chemical formula MX2 (M=Mo,W, X=S, Se) have been shown to have unique optical properties. Their lattice symmetry, combined with the presence of heavy constituent atoms, leads to the coupling of spin- and valley- degrees of freedom, which can be addressed using circularly polarized light. In order to exploit the properties of the material, doping methods as used in classic semiconductors are highly desirable. In this project, we will evaluate the ion implantation as a method of introducing doping in MoS2.

The project will build on our preliminary work on ion implantation with ions at energies of 10-30 eV and it will aim at characterizing the effects of implantation using optical spectroscopy. A variety of optical characterization techniques will be used, including low temperature photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation spectroscopies and Raman spectroscopy. The project will involve the preparation of samples for implantation, as well as devices from the implanted monolayers using microelectronic fabrication techniques.

The project is ideal for a candidate who:

  • Has a Bachelor degree in Physics
  • Is able to work independently and in a small team
  • Enjoys working in a laboratory
  • Has good communication and documentation skills
  • Is able to get to the heart of a problem and to solve it quickly and efficiently
