The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-2 – Electronic Systems) is a scientific technical institute of Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in cooperation with the institutes of the research center as well as external partners. The focus of our work is electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor and detector technology, signal and data processing as well as measurement techniques. Hereby the preferred approach are silicon-based System-on-Chip (SoC, highly integrated) solutions.

Field of activity:
In future quantum computers, millions of qubits need to be addressed and read out in parallel. This puts very stringent and demanding requirements on the control electronic of the qubits based on classical technologies. On top, solid state or superconducting qubits have to be operated at cryogenic temperatures well below 100 mK, putting a limit on the total power budget of cryogenic control electronics on the order of 1 mW. Within the Quantencomputing program, we implement circuits in standard CMOS and investigate their behavior at temperatures around a few Kelvin.

Your task:
In this project you will develop and implement novel concepts based on conventional or SOI CMOS processes to readout the state of semiconductor and superconducting qubits. The CMOS circuits will be placed next to the qubits at cryogenic temperature as a building block for future scalable system architectures. In close cooperation with our national and international partners you will derive the requirements for the readout circuits and implement them in state-of-the-art semiconductor processes. You will test and characterize the circuits in our verification lab down to liquid helium temperatures. The performance of the novel readout approaches in combination with semiconductor and superconducting qubits will be assessed in close cooperation with our national and international partners.
