HITEC (Helmholtz Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training in Energy and Climate) is an international graduate school and a joint initiative between Forschungszentrum Jülich, the RWTH Aachen University, the University of Bochum, the University of Cologne, the University of Düsseldorf, and the University of Wuppertal for scientists and engineers who want to earn a Ph.D. in the challenging fields of energy and climate research. HITEC is committed to scientific excellence, to an interdisciplinary and international research environment, to an accepting learning environment which embraces diversity, and aims to turn the Ph.D. students into well needed experts for academia and industry.

Your work
We are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers for doctoral studies in energy and climate research, specicifically in materials science, energy conversion, renewable energies, plasma physics, nuclear waste management, modeling, numerical simulations, atmospheric physics or chemistry, energy economics. 28 projects and 8 research fields are open for application; 7 positions as HITEC Fellows are available. For details of projects and application procedure see www.hitec-graduate-school.de.

We aim to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcome applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.

Your profile
Candidates are expected to have a Master, a German "Diplom" or an equivalent degree, when they start their Ph.D. project. The specifics of the degree and the experience required for each of the projects are indicated on the HITEC website www.hitec-graduate-school.de.

The integration in national and international cooperations requires the willingness to work in teams. We expect that the candidates are able to communicate their results in oral and written form in very good English.

Our offer
HITEC offers a 3-year training programme which complements the doctoral thesis: students can select from a variety of HITEC events, including lectures on topics or methods, hands-on training courses in the lab or professional skills training.

Funding will be granted for three years including salary and social benefits conforming to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the German Civil Service (TVÖD). HITEC Fellows will be able to finish their Ph.D. work within this period of time.

Our selection
After closing of the call the applications will be reviewed. The best candidates will be invited to Germany for a week (March 16 – 25, 2015) in order to work out the details of the project with the research group which hosts the project. Successful candidates will receive an email notification about the admission and invitation by the end of January 2015. The final decision will be reached after individual presentations to the HITEC Advisory Board on 24 March 2015. The earliest starting point will be May 2015, later starts are possible.

Please submit your application with the relevant documentation electronically to hitec@fz-juelich.de. Only complete applications with reference to one of the advertised projects or research fields will be accepted for review. Deadline is 05 December 2014.
