The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, IBG-2: Plant Sciences, at the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH has a nationally and internationally leading role in quantitative assessment of structural and functional plant traits using non-invasive methods. Within the framework of the project DPPN (Deutsches Pflanzen Phänotypisierungsnetzwerk; www.dppn.de) we develop new concepts and non-invasive approaches for high throughput plant phenotyping for laboratory, greenhouse and field applications. A major task is to develop standards and protocols that support experimental design and statistical analysis of plant phenomics data.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc (f/m) Biology/Bio-informatics for DPPN: establishing of experimental designs and analytical pipelines for plant phenotyping experiements (en)

Your Job:

Typical experiments include standardized phenotypic screening routines for the quantitative assessment of plant traits and their plasticity as a response to environmental treatments within the DPPN project. Your tasks include the evaluation and application of appropriate experimental designs and the establishment of a framework for statistical analysis of phenotyping experiments with selected crop species. The developed methodologies are required for experiments in controlled environment and in the field. Standardization of the analysis by generating automated reports and supporting data interpretation by using appropriate experimental quality metrics are part of the required tasks. These tasks will be performed in a team of plant biologists and technical personnel. Further tasks include detailed documentations of the accomplished work and writing scientific reports and contributions to scientific publications.

Your Profile:

  • scientist with Ph.D. in bio-informatics or bio-statistics
  • good knowledge and experience in experimental design, biometrical methods and applied bio-statistics
  • experience in the application of multivariate and mixed-model analysis
  • thorough knowledge and experience with the R statistical software and visualization packages
  • ability to work both independently and in an international research team
  • very good knowledge of written and spoken English is required for this position


Desirable skills:
  • knowledge of other standard statistical software packages such as SAS
  • experience in the field of plant bio-statistics applied to plant biology
  • experience with SQL and database
