The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences, IBG-2: Plant Sciences, at the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH has a nationally and internationally leading role in quantitative assessment of structural and functional plant traits with non-invasive methods. Within the framework of the project DPPN (Deutsches Pflanzen Phänotypisierungsnetzwerk; www.dppn.de) we develop new concepts and non-invasive approaches for high throughput plant phenotyping for laboratory, greenhouse and field applications. In parallel we are developing a plant database system that also captures experimental meta-data and plant history by using and integrating ontologies available in the public domain.

We are looking to recruit a

Bachelor of Science - Computer Science/mathematical-technical Software developer (f/m) for DPPN: development of an ontology-based metadata system for plant phenomics experiments (en)

Your Job:

The establishment of high throughput phenotyping approaches for the quantitative assessment of plant traits generates large and multi-dimensional datasets. Data analysis and interpretation require a set of accurate descriptors of experimental treatments and environmental conditions experienced by plants during the experiments. These variables need to be integrated in plant phenomics databases and associated with individual plants and genotypes. Your duties include the systematic parsing and evaluation of currently available ontologies to describe meta-data variables in machine readable formats. Identified gaps (e.g., in description of environmental variables) might require ad hoc development of new ontologies to be released in the public domain. We aim at the integration of an ontology-based system into our current database storage and analysis pipeline. These tasks will be performed in close coordination with a team of plant biologists and database developers. Your tasks will include the detailed documentation of the accomplished work as well as the support for the completion of technical reports.

Your Profile:

  • very good knowledge and experience with the object oriented programming languages Java, Phyton, C++ and C#
  • good knowledge and experience with the XML markup language
  • practical experience in using ontology development and editing software such as Protégé
  • ability to work independently and in an international team
  • excellent communication skills
  • very good knowledge of written and spoken English


Desirable skills:
  • knowledge of SQL language and middleware technologies (e.g., ICE, SOAP, CORBA)
